How to Spot Fake vs. Authentic Brands: An Outlet Guide
One of the biggest concerns when shopping at outlets or hunting for bargains is the question: "Is this authentic?"
It is understandable. When you see a Hugo Boss shirt or Nike sneakers with a 50% or even 70% discount, your first instinct is doubt. As outlet specialists in Riga, we want to dispel the myths and give you the knowledge so you can shop with confidence.
Here are 4 steps to professionally distinguish an authentic brand from a fake.
1. Check the Product Code (SKU)
The most effective way to verify authenticity is the manufacturer code. Most brands (Adidas, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) have a specific model code on the inner care label.
- What to do: Type this code into Google Images.
The Result: If the item is original, the exact same product should appear in the search results. If the code brings up a different item (e.g., the code shows socks, but you are holding a jacket)-it is likely a fake.
2. Look at Stitching and "Cleanliness"
For luxury and well-known brands, quality control is paramount. Authentic clothing will have straight, even stitching without loose threads.
- The Attention Test: Turn the garment inside out. Fakes often look good on the outside, but the internal seams are messy and low quality.
- Logos: Logos must be perfectly embroidered or printed. The spacing between letters should be even.

3. Hardware: Zippers and Buttons
Counterfeit manufacturers often save money on details. Original brands use high-quality hardware.
- Zippers: The world's most popular manufacturer of quality zippers is YKK. Many brands (like The North Face, Levi's) use them specifically. Check if the slider has the brand logo or "YKK" stamped on it.
- Buttons: Many brands will have the brand name engraved on the buttons.
4. Why are Outlet Items Cheaper?
It is crucial not to confuse a fake with "B-Stock" or past season items. In our store (and other trusted outlets), prices are low for three specific reasons:
- Past Season Collections: It is authentic, it was simply manufactured last year.
- Broken Sizes: Only XS or XXL sizes remain, so the price is reduced to clear the stock.
- Packaging Defects: The item is perfect, but the shoe box or bag was damaged during transit.
